What does Writer's Workshop Look Like?
Mini-lesson- Mini-lessons in writing are very similar to those in reading and often go hand-in-hand. The mini-lesson is where I can make a suggestion to the whole class, raise a concern, explore an issue, model a technique and teach or reinforce a strategy. After observing my students engaging in their own important work I decide what I can suggest or demonstrate that might help the most. A mini-lesson lasts about 10-15 minutes.
Independent Writing- After the mini-lesson, students work in their writer’s folder to collect entries that may later become published pieces. The total time lasts for about 30 minutes ( not in the beginning of the year!) and during that time some students may be involved in conferences with the teacher. During this time, teachers will also work with small groups of students to reinforce various skills! Sharing- At the end of Writing Workshop, students are brought together for a 5-10 minute group share and reflection. Sometimes a writer might come to the author’s chair to share an entry that he or she is especially proud of. |
