What does Reader's Workshop Look Like?
All students in grades kindergarten-third participate in daily reader's workshop. This consists of:
Mini-lesson-Each Reading Workshop session will begin with a mini lesson that lasts 10-15 minutes. During each mini lesson, the teacher will introduce a specific concept, also known as a teaching point. Most often the teaching point will focus on a reading strategy or skill. The teacher will explicitly model or demonstrate the skill or strategy. Students get a chance to practice the skill or strategy on their own or with a partner. This part of the mini lesson is called the active engagement. Independent Reading- During this time students are engaged in self-selected texts at their individual level. They use this time to practice the skill that was taught during the mini lesson. Students are reading at their reading spot around the room while the teacher holds individual reading conferences or meets with small groups of students for guided reading or strategy lessons. Students are also given the opportunity to read and practice these new skills with a buddy. Closing- the class meets back on the rug to review the mini lesson and talk about the reading work that was done during independent reading. This is also an opportunity for students to share their success at the new skill or strategy that was taught. |
Everyone has heard the proverb "practice makes perfect." In learning to read it is true that reading practice – just reading – is a powerful contributor to the development of accurate, fluent, high-comprehension reading (Allington, 2009).
